Andromeda has created a striking Venetian chandelier for the lobby of New York's
Gramercy Park Hotel.
Not just any old hotel, but the latest creation by Ian Schrager who appointed the artist
Julian Schnabel as the project's creative director.
Schnabel has developed a concept completely new for the hotel sector, representing a
sensuous vision of artful diversity. Bohemia reinvented for the 21st century with an original
combination of styles, with great pieces of furniture and art and the extraordinary use of color.
It brings together a number of creative forces, not chosen for their compatibility, but for
their shared commitment to the modern lifestyle.
In the course of this research into values, Schrager and Schnabel asked Andromeda to
create a chandelier to decorate the hotel’s lobby and interpret their aesthetic concept.
The result is a unique collision of architecture and furnishings: hanging above in the
center is an immense hand-blown Venetian glass chandelier, custom-made for the hotel based
on a 15th-century Italian design. The chandelier is 8-feet high by 4-feet in diameter, made of
gray glass punctuated by moonstone and champagne custom colors. The details of this unique
asymmetrical composition further enhance its tremendous scale and recall the history of grand
chandeliers.
A magnificent Rezzonico style Venetian chandelier, the body and arms of which are
embellished with turquoise flowers and leaves made with sophisticated workmanship.
Ian Schrager is the man who in the 1970s reinvented the concept of the nightclub with
venues such as Studio 54 and the Palladium, in the 1980s opened up the way to the design hotel
with projects such as the Morgans, Royalton, Delano and Mondrian. Today he is still
innovating the hotel concept, making the Gramercy Park Hotel the anti-brand and anti-design
hotel par excellence.
"We have already been responsible in the past for the lighting in many of Schrager's design hotels, " confirms Gianluca Vecchi, chairman of Andromeda. "It was therefore natural
to pick up the collaboration again with this ambitious new project involving all the creative and
technical resources which have made Andromeda a leader in the top of the range contract
